Excuse my language, but I’m calling bullsh*t on something I heard last week.
One of my clients told me her certification program taught her that the only way she should be coaching is to let the client lead each coaching session.
She should just sit back and wait until the clients tell her what they need.
Uhh… no.
You’re not there to play therapist and listen to all their problems. They hired you because they want to make a specific transformation.
And this is far from the first time I’ve heard this kind of bad advice tossed around.
I’ve heard variations of this for years.
“You should only provide accountability coaching. That’s all people need.”
“You just need to help people get out of their own way. Help them through their negative thought patterns.”
Etc.
There is accountability coaching, mindset coaching, and skill-building / knowledge coaching.
And the common advice is to pick one of these exclusively.
But here’s the problem…
If you focus on just one, it’s not enough.
Your clients are coming to you because they want and need the transformation you provide.
It’s your job to do whatever you can to help get them there.
EVERYTHING
If they need accountability, give it to them.
If they need to get over their limiting beliefs, help them do that.
If they need to learn a new skill to get the results, teach them.
Can you imagine showing up to a pet store and being told, “sorry, we only sell dog toys here. We refuse to offer anything else. You’ll have to visit 3 more stores to get everything you need for your dog.”
(not a perfect analogy, but you get the idea 😉
When I was first starting my business, my first coach believed that I (and everyone else) needed just two things to build a business:
- To network
- To get over my fear
And while I did feel a ton of fear in the beginning, it was because I didn’t know what I was doing!
All of my fear came from not knowing my best next step.
I needed a coach to hold me accountable, help me get past any limiting beliefs, AND help me gain the skills I needed to succeed. Plus I needed them to guide me along a path that would help me build my business my way.
And the worst bit?
I went backwards!
Not having a coach that understood the importance of helping me with accountability, mindset, and step-by-step actions based on my strengths and genius zone probably set me back in my business by about 18 months.
And that's the last thing we want for our clients, right?
So my question for you is…
What kind of coach do you want to be?
Do you want to be...
An accountability coach
A mindset coach
A skill set & knowledge coach
Or an “I’m going to bring everything I am and everything I’ve got to help you get the results you want” coach
